Segment Event Streaming

The Kameleoon Segment Event Streaming integration allows you to automatically send events to your Segment account whenever visitors are exposed to one of your Kameleoon experiments. This integration enables enriched analytics in Segment, providing insights into experiment exposure to help you better understand user behavior and engagement.

This integration uses Kameleoon's event dispatcher to send server-side events to your Segment account in batches using the /batch endpoint of the Segment HTTP API.

Considerations​

Kameleoon's server dispatches events to Segment with a minimum 30-minute delay.

To configure this integration, the following is required:

  • Kameleoon SDK: The Kameleoon SDK must be installed on your server-side project.
  • Write Key: Your Segment Write Key (you should create a new Segment source for Kameleoon events, though an existing key can be used).
  • Workspace location: Specify if your Segment workspace is located in the EU. You can find this information in your Segment workspace settings.

Setup​

This integration can be activated for Web and Feature experiments.

For Web experiments​

  1. Click Admin > Integrations.
  2. Click the download icon on the right of Segment's card.
  3. Select the projects on which you want to configure Segment and click Validate.
  4. Add Segment in the Integrations tab of the finalization flow.

For Feature experiments​

  1. Edit a feature flag or create a new one.
  2. Under Reporting, click Integrations.
  3. Toggle Segment on in all desired environments.

Once the integration is activated and your experiment is live, Kameleoon will begin sending experiment events to Segment whenever a visitor is exposed. These events include key details such as:

  • User ID
  • Exposure time
  • Kameleoon experiment ID
  • Kameleoon variant ID

Event payload example​

Kameleoon sends events to Segment in the following format:

By default, userId will contain the visitor's Kameleoon visitor code. If you have set up Kameleoon cross-device reconciliation, the identifier put into the cross-device reconciliation custom data will be taken instead of the visitor code.

Note that any custom data specific to your organization, typically included in your Segment events, won't be present in the events sent by Kameleoon from the server. If you need to enrich the payload with data not tracked natively by Kameleoon, you can submit a feature request.
