Update your segments for better targeting
Kameleoon is separating segmentation and triggers to provide clearer and more effective targeting.
Segments define who a visitor is and their characteristics. They help you target users based on their attributes, behaviors, and past interactions. Triggers define where and when a visitor is exposed to the experiment, based on specific actions or conditions.
As part of this change, Kameleoon is moving certain conditions from the segment builder to the trigger builder. This includes conditions related to how, where, and when a user interacts with your website.
Timeline
- Since February: You can create Triggers from a dedicated dashboard in the app and use them during the finalization step by selecting the Target specific visitors option in the targeting section. This option allows you to combine both Segments and Triggers for more precise targeting.
- Since April: Kameleoon has marked all segments that use criteria moving to the Trigger Builder as "deprecated". You can filter your dashboard by deprecation status to view the affected segments. To assist with the transition, Kameleoon will soon deploy a feature to help you automatically recreate deprecated segments and triggers.
- April 2026: Kameleoon will release a brand-new version of the Segment and Trigger builders. At that point, Kameleoon will fully separate conditions, and you will no longer be able to edit deprecated segments. To ensure continuity, update any segments and triggers you wish to keep using before this update.
What does this mean for you?
- Clearer roles for segments and triggers, reducing confusion about their purposes
- Deprecated segments require updates – you must recreate any deprecated segments or triggers according to the new separation of conditions. Kameleoon will assist you in this process.
Kameleoon automatically marks segments as "deprecated" if they include targeting criteria moving to triggers. Does this require action? Not necessarily! You only need to take action if you use these segments in an active experiment.
Refer to this table for guidance on properly re-creating your segments and triggers.
If you do not migrate deprecated segments before summer (exact date to be announced), they will become non-editable. However, experiments using them will continue to run.
This update clarifies the roles of segments and triggers. It improves the experiment creation process by eliminating the need to create multiple segments for similar scenarios.
For example, if you want to target returning visitors with five different experiments across various pages, you can now create a single segment and define one trigger per experiment. Previously, you had to build five separate segments. This change also enhances the performance of Kameleoon's AI Opportunity Detection. Currently, the AI engine excludes segments containing conditions that should be triggers. By separating the two, the system can detect more opportunities and deliver smarter recommendations.
If you use Feature Experiments or Personalization campaigns, you do not need to take action now. Additionally, Kameleoon will update Finalization for Web Experiments, Personalizations, and Flags to reflect these changes. Future communications will provide a more detailed timeline.
