We are separating segmentation and triggers to provide clearer and more effective targeting. Segments define who a user is, and triggers define the actions or conditions that trigger a campaign.

Certain conditions currently found in the segment builder (those that describe how, where, and when a user interacts with your website) will be moved to the trigger builder. Similarly, conditions in the trigger builder that pertain only to segmentation will now be in the segment builder.

What does this mean for you?

  • Clearer roles for segments and triggers: Segments define who your visitors are. Triggers define when the campaign is displayed to your visitors.
  • Combined use in targeting: You can combine segments and triggers as targeting criteria in your web experiments.
  • Deprecated segments and triggers need updating: You must re-create any segments or triggers labeled as deprecated according to the conditions’ new separation.
  • Planned, live, or paused experiments using deprecated segments or triggers will be stopped. We strongly recommend duplicating these experiments and applying updated segments and triggers to avoid interruptions. See below for the transition timeline.
  • Draft experiments reset: The targeting of all draft experiments will be reset to default.

Transition timeline

  • Beta Program Users: Ensure that all deprecated segments and triggers are re-created and live campaigns using old targeting conditions are updated before the end of May.
  • General Users: Make these updates before the end of July.

Future communications will provide a more precise date for these changes.

How to re-create your segments and triggers
